What is it?
“Qui Tam” is an abbreviation for the Latin phrase “qui tam pro domino rege quam pro se in hac parte sequitur,” meaning “who sues on behalf of the king as well as himself.” Qui tam lawsuits are civil suits brought by an employee/whistleblower (known as a “relator”) in an effort to stop various types of fraud against the government.
For example, if your employer knowingly presents a fraudulent claim for payment to the government, takes or gives a kickback for a referral, does not accurately abide by the terms or conditions of a government contract, or fails to accurately report or pay taxes, your employer may be engaging in fraud against the government. A successful Qui Tam lawsuit assists the government in recovering damages and penalties. In addition, the relator can earn a whistleblower award.
